Review: Rudi Ekstein – Carolina Chimes

Rudy Ekstein is a mandolinist based in Asheville, North Carolina who delivers twelve original tunes in a classic bluegrass ensemble setting. A stellar list of supporting musicians make up the various ensemble formations: Stuart Duncan, Jeff Autry, Mark Schatz, John Plotnik, Seth Rhinehart, Rob Parks and Patrick Sauber. Not surprisingly, Stuart’s fiddling can at times steal the show. But this is Rudi’s project, and he finds his way around the mandolin with a relaxed and sure authority. He offers a palate that has absorbed many of the classic bluegrass mandolin instrumentals. Now he brings fresh melodies for aspiring mandolin players to add to their own repertoire. If you want to add some new, dynamic tunes to your repertoire, Carolina Chimes will be a good place to start listening and learning.

  • I do not have command of the words to say how enjoyable this recording is to me. Back Drag is my new Rawhide. Carolina Chimes transports me to a serene and happy place. All in all, the entire collection is simply a joy to my ears.

    • Lois, thanks so much for listening, enjoying new bluegrass, and your appreciation of my album, Carolina Chimes. Comparing my tune, Back Drag to Bill Monroe’s classic bluegrass instrumental, Rawhide is quite a compliment for me, especially from someone as experienced and as knowledgeable about bluegrass music as you are.
