APRIL 26, 2024 TRIVIA QUESTION

Cities With Something in Common

These five cities have something about bluegrass in common, except one city which doesn’t belong here: Owensboro KY, Louisville KY, Nashville TN, Knoxville TN, Raleigh NC

Which one of the following statements is true as far as identifying the city which doesn’t belong? Read carefully. Think carefully.

A. Owensboro KY is the outlier, because the Monroe Brothers played on radio stations in all the other cities but not Owensboro

B. Louisville KY is the outlier, because all the other cities had radio “Barn Dance” programs, except Louisville

C. Nashville TN is the outlier, because all the other cities have colleges or universities granting degrees in bluegrass music, except Nashville

D. Knoxville TN is the outlier, because all the other cities have hosted IBMA’s annual “World of Bluegrass” convention, but Knoxville has not

E. Raleigh NC is the outlier, because it has no claim to bluegrass fame at all

ANSWER is “D”

Additional Bowden Comments

Good job Andy and Bobbi. But I guess I’m gonna have to make these Trivia Questions a bit easier…

D is correct, all the cities listed have hosted the annual IBMA World of Bluegrass convention, festival, etc, except Knoxville TN. Did I hear correctly the Providence RI is putting a bid to host the big fall wing-ding when their welcome runs out in Raleigh?

A. is incorrect because the remaining cities were not all places where the Monroe Bros. played on the radio. A nice bit of bluegrass trivia is that Owensboro IS the place where the youthful Bill Monroe had a couple of surgeries — to uncross his eyes and I think also appendicitis. O’boro is the nearest city of any size to Rosine/Horton KY where Bill grew up.

B. is incorrect because not all of the other cities had radio “Barn Dances”. Louisville did have a radio barn dance, at least for a little while.

C. is incorrect because not all of the other cities of colleges/universities granting bluegrass degrees, and because Nashville does have a famous college with courses in bluegrass and other music — Belmont College.

E. is incorrect because Raleigh NC does indeed have claims to bluegrass fame. It’s the place where the Monroe Bros. last worked together before they split up; Flatt & Scruggs played a good stint on WPTR radio with their morning show, and Raleigh has hosted the IBMA World of Bluegrass Week for the past 10 years. Raleigh has solid bluegrass cred.
