The HVBA placed a bid for a concert given by Michael Daves as part of his Kickstarter Project. And….we won!!!!! We were given the opportunity to choose one of Michael’s “friends” and didn’t skip a beat when we chose Jen Larson. Two great, great bluegrass musicians are coming to Poughkeepsie and, if you act quickly, you will be among the lucky people to snare a seat.
Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, and Rosanne Cash in addition to his solo performances. His most recent project is “Sleep With One Eye Open,” the debut album from Thile and Daves, which was recorded live to tape over four days at Jack White’s Third Man studio in Nashville. The duo makes for “a rip-roaring partnership,” says the New York Times. “Bluegrass, in their hands, gets roughed up in the best possible way, with skill and fervor, and a touch of abandon.” “Sleep With One Eye Open” received a 2011 Grammy Nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.
Currently Michael lives in New York, where he is supervised by his daughter and two vigorous cats. Brooklyn, New York is a very exciting place to live. In addition to playing music & teaching, Michael enjoys turning the knobs & playing with the buttons some on several pieces of recording equipment. This is why he put a studio into his house.
Jen is a Brooklyn-based, bluegrass and honky-tonk singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist with a deep love of jazz, blues and British and Appalachian folk ballads. From 2000-2011, she played and recorded with the bluegrass band, Straight Drive. They performed from Carnegie Hall to the Wheeling Jamboree, and shared festival stages with some of the greats, including Doyle Lawson, Jessie McReynolds, The Osborne Brothers, Ronnie Reno and Dan Paisley.
She has also appeared several times on Garrison Keillor’s nationally-broadcast weekly radio program, “A Prairie Home Companion.” Most recently, she can be found performing in and around NYC with Miller’s Crossing, a Long Island-based bluegrass group led by Marjorie Kelting, and with her own ensemble, Jen Larson & Deep River.
