JUNE 4, 2021 TRIVIA QUESTION

Many are famous in bluegrass music not for being the first, but for being VERY successful as the “second”. For instance, the Stanley Brothers were the first to purposely copy Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys – they were the second bluegrass band. Don Reno “followed” Earl Scruggs as the next Blue Grass Boy banjoist. Larry Sparks “followed” as lead singer with Ralph Stanley after brother Carter died. Rhode Island’s Jimmy Gaudreau “followed” John Duffey as mandolin playing tenor singer with the Country Gentlemen.

Phil Rosenthal of Connecticut plays guitar, sings, and writes songs. What bluegrasser did he “follow” very successfully?

A. John Herald in the Greenbriar Boys
B. Charlie Waller in the Country Gentlemen
C. Red Allen in the Osborne Brothers
D. Dr. John Starling in the Seldom Scene
E. Dan Tyminski in Allison Krauss + Union Station

The answer is ” D. Dr. John Starling of the Seldom Scene”.

Additional Bowden Comments

Kee-rect!! The answer was D. Phil Rosenthal “followed” Dr John Starling in the Seldom Scene. It’s not widely remembered that the great Tony Rice “sort of” tried out for the spot too (very quietly). He cut a record backed mostly by the Seldom Scene too at about that time. For whatever reason it didn’t go any further than that.

Good to see a new player in our little game. I know Vernon Huff. Good to see you here buddy!

Let’s get the players count back up there in triple digits like in the old COVID isolation days!
