JULY 16 TRIVIA QUESTION

How many women are in the IBMA Hall of Fame (including back when it used to known as the “Hall of Honor” because Bill and James Monroe had a trademarked “Bluegrass Hall of Fame” attraction of their own and they wouldn’t let IBMA use the term Hall of Fame)?

Show your work – name them if you think there are any.

A. None
B. Two
C. Three
D. Seven
E. Ten

ANSWER is “E”

Additional Bowden Comments

Andy was right in spite of himself. The correct answer was E – 10.

Allison Krauss, Lynn Morris and the Stoneman Girls haven’t been inducted yet. They were ANNOUNCED last week or so, but won’t be inducted until September in Raleigh.

Andy named some of the current ladies in the Hall of Fame but neglected: the other two singing Lewis Family ladies Miggie and Janis; and Miss Dixie Hall (Tom T Hall’s wife and co-writer). Allison Krauss, Lynn Morris and the two Stoneman girls will make it 14, but they haven’t been inducted yet. They were just announced last week and won’t be inducted until September in Raleigh NC.

For those who don’t know Marian Leighton-Levy is one of the three founders of Rounder Records in Boston. The latest Bluegrass Unlimited has a nice article about them. Reading it I found out Marian is from my home state of Maine!

So you see women have gotten “respect” in bluegrass for some time. Their role is really growing, as you can discern in the annual IBMA “Best” nominations.

  • WHAT?!?!?!??! NO ENTRIES!?!?!??!

Come on folks, or this will go to my head.

    You can always guess!

At least name ANY woman/women in the Hall of Fame if you think there are any. Even if you think there are None (A), throw it out there.

You can’t win if you don’t play.

Physical prize for this one: I’ll mail you the review copy of Larry Sparks’ gospel CD.

If you get the NUMBER right, and can name any (if any) woman/women, instead of all of them (if any), you’ll still win. Naming them all (if any) is not a requirement.

  • I will go with E, 10, although that number seems too low, counting Donna and Roni Stoneman as part of the Stoneman Family and Polly Lewis as part of the Lewis Family, together with the named women members, Sara Carter, Maybelle Carter, Louise Scruggs, Marian Leighton-Levy, Hazel Dickinson, Alice Gerrard, Alison Krauss, and Lynn Morris, for a total of 11.
