This beautiful instrumental album presents eleven original tunes from rising mandolin star David Benedict. A sublime listen, The Golden Angle manages to be inventive and original while holding a delicate balance with traditional instrumental bluegrass.
“Lawnmower”
Featuring legendary Nashville pickers such as David Grier, Stuart Duncan, Missy Raines and producer Matt Flinner, as well as superlative musicians Mike Barnett, Ross Martin and Wes Corbett, Benedict’s compositions provide perfect structures for the musicians to display their improvisational voices. The album provides a nice variety of time-feels and tempos, with some sentimental numbers such as “Possible Waters” and “Leaf By Niggle” balanced by the virtuosity of the title track and “Lawnmower.”
We will no doubt hear more from David Benedict. He earned a 2018 IBMA Momentum Award, and his band Mile Twelve has a busy tour schedule throughout 2019. Hopefully he will find time to continue writing and recording his own tunes. The Golden Angle is an album that warrants repeated listening.
