Bluegrass has changed a lot in the twenty-first century. New pickers have continued to raise the bar of instrumental prowess while the previous generations have continued their development of the genre, with arcs dating as far back as the 1970s. Today, these new- and old-guard pickers are collaboratively forging a new fiddle tune canon—as evidenced by tracks like “Jim Thompson’s Horse” featuring Noam Pikelny and Tim O’Brien, “Rare Bird Alert” featuring Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, and “Hug Point” featuring Bela Fleck, Sierra Hull, and Molly Tuttle.
